Description

Vintage Pine Blanket Chest with Geometric Motifs, 48.5″

A vintage solid pine blanket chest, each side constructed from a single wide board, showcasing sturdy craftsmanship and rustic appeal. The exterior is finished in a warm reddish-brown varnish, now worn in areas to reveal the natural pine grain, and decorated with bold hand-painted black geometric motifs including double-diamond forms and stepped corner borders. The contrast produces an ebonized effect that enhances the chest’s graphic folk-art character.

Fitted with original iron strap hinges, block side handles, and an interior chain support, the chest remains practical and versatile in function. Its generous size makes it suitable as a traditional blanket chest, storage trunk, rustic bench, or coffee table. The hand-painted decoration reflects the influence of Pennsylvania German folk-art traditions, while its simplified design and hardware suggest an early-to-mid 20th century American origin.

Condition:

Good overall with scratches, scuffing, fading, and finish loss consistent with age and use. Painted decoration shows areas of wear, particularly along the lower edges. A section of trim is missing from the right side of the lid. Interior left unfinished in pine, with light age toning and use marks but no structural issues. Hardware remains functional and the piece is sturdy throughout.
