Description

Exceptional 1960s Navajo BTC Sterling Silver & Kingman Turquoise Cluster Cuff – Heirloom Quality

A radiant expression of Navajo heritage, this mid-century sterling silver cluster cuff exemplifies the finest traditions of Southwestern silversmithing. Handcrafted circa the 1960s and signed “BTC” alongside “NAV” (denoting Navajo origin), the piece is a commanding example of wearable sculpture—balancing bold presence with intricate detail.

Forty natural Kingman turquoise cabochons—revered for their vivid blue hues and delicate matrix—are precisely bezel-set in a traditional concentric cluster formation. The central stone, an elongated oval measuring approximately 13.62 × 5.03 mm, is framed by gracefully tapered teardrop stones, each showcasing the distinctive saturation and matrixing for which Kingman turquoise is celebrated.

The silverwork is both architectural and refined: a triple split-shank provides structural stability and visual harmony, while sawtooth bezels, hand-scalloped edging, and twisted wire borders underscore the artisan’s skill. The entire face is set against a contrasting patinated background, oxidized using traditional methods—such as liver of sulfur—to create depth and amplify the dimensionality of the design. This technique, widely employed in Navajo silversmithing, enhances visual contrast while honoring ceremonial aesthetics.

Measurements:

  • Face Dimensions: 1.5″ × 2.5″ × 2.5″ (3.81 × 6.35 × 6.35 cm)
  • Inner Circumference (including gap): approx. 5.75″ (14.61 cm)
  • Gap/Opening: approx. 0.75″ (1.91 cm) – slightly adjustable with care
  • Weight: 67.22 grams (2.37 oz)
  • Best suited for wrists measuring 5.75″–6.25″

Condition:
Good vintage condition with a deep, authentic patina and minimal signs of age-appropriate wear. All stones are securely set. This piece has not been polished, allowing the oxidized silver to retain its original character and integrity.

Artisan Attribution & Hallmark Notes:
The “BTC” hallmark is attributed to a skilled Navajo artisan. Some speculative sources suggest a possible connection to Brugh Tsosie, though current research remains inconclusive. While the exact identity of the maker is not verified, the craftsmanship clearly reflects a seasoned silversmith working in the classic cluster tradition.

Cluster bracelets are a hallmark of Navajo jewelry design, representing unity, cosmology, and protective symbolism. This exquisite Navajo cuff is a true collector’s piece—fusing gemstone, silver, and spirit into a timeless heirloom. With its luminous Kingman turquoise, vintage 1960s origin, and expertly rendered form, it embodies the legacy of Navajo silversmithing at its finest. A rare and resonant piece, equally suited for wearing or collection.
