Nikkorex F 35mm SLR Camera Body — Nippon Kogaku Tokyo, c.1962
This is a vintage Nikkorex F 35mm single-lens reflex camera body, serial number 370890, produced in Japan circa 1962. Marked “NIKKOREX F” on the prism and “Nippon Kogaku Tokyo” on the rear, it represents Nikon’s first budget-level interchangeable-lens SLR. Built by Mamiya for Nippon Kogaku, the model introduced the now-legendary Copal Square vertical metal shutter, a design that influenced Nikon cameras for decades. Unlike the fixed-lens Nikkorex models, the F featured the Nikon F bayonet mount, allowing full use of Nikkor lenses.
Finished in chrome metal with black leatherette covering, the body displays classic early 1960s SLR styling. Features include dual flash sync ports (M and X), ASA settings up to 800, and mechanical controls for shutter and film advance. The camera is fitted with a vintage metal strap, completing the period presentation.
The Nikkorex F is historically significant as Nikon’s bridge between entry-level users and the professional Nikon F system, and is a sought-after piece for collectors of mid-century Japanese cameras.
Condition:
In good vintage condition. Chrome shows scratches, small dings, and finish wear, particularly near the prism and top plate. Leatherette remains intact . Shutter and advance lever respond, but the camera has not been film-tested and is sold as a collectible body. Please review detailed images for condition.
Dimensions:
Approx. 5.7 x 3.7 x 2.5 inches (body only). Includes attached vintage metal strap.
