Folk Art Santos – Hand Carved & Painted Wood Figures
Pair of hand-carved and hand-painted wooden folk art santos, each carved from solid wood and decorated in vivid polychrome. Both figures feature geometric stylized faces and bold floral patterns, reflecting the regional santo (bulto) tradition of Mexico and Northern New Mexico.
One depicts a bearded male santo, possibly Saint Joseph, holding carved objects in his hands, including a wooden spoon, and wearing a purple robe with a large floral motif. The other depicts a santo in prayer, dressed in a yellow-green robe with floral accents, standing above a smaller carved figure with wings. Both display expressive folk artistry and strong devotional character.
Condition
Very good overall, with only minor surface wear consistent with age. Paint is bright and intact, with no structural damage noted.
