Hand-Carved Folk Virgen Figure — Painted Devotional Sculpture, 16.25"
This hand-carved and painted wooden figure of the Virgen is a vibrant example of Latin American devotional folk art. Carved from a single solid piece of wood, the figure stands 16¼ inches tall and features a tall, stylized form with hands clasped in prayer, framed by a painted fan-shaped halo. The robe is adorned with bold floral motifs against a bright blue ground, bordered by red and pink scrollwork—reminiscent of traditional bultos made for home altars or nichos.
Though unsigned, the figure strongly reflects the influence of Mexican and New Mexican religious carving, blending Spanish colonial iconography with a joyful folk sensibility. A colorful and heartfelt devotional piece, full of regional charm and spiritual expression.
