Hand-Sculpted "Curandera" Ceramic Praying Figure — White Slip & Terracotta
Expressive studio sculpture of a robed figure in the classic orant (prayer) pose. Hand-built from a grogged white clay body with matte white slip forming deep, layered drapery; the face, forearms, and side pouch are contrasting terracotta, likely unglazed. Interior rib marks and subtle slab seams attest to careful construction. The small hanging pouch—still holding a bit of dried vegetal fiber—suggests a healer/curandera theme. Incised on the side with ’94 and a small circled monogram; maker unknown. A contemplative, textural work suited to Southwestern, folk, or eclectic displays.
Condition
Good overall; both hands have been previously reattached. Small chips and stable hairlines at the pouch, minor edge nicks to the drapery, and light soiling/rubs consistent with handling. Presents nicely; see photos.
