Two Miniature Mata Ortiz Pottery Jars Collection
A pair of finely crafted miniature pottery jars from the celebrated Mata Ortiz tradition of northern Chihuahua, Mexico. Both works highlight the artistry and cultural heritage of this renowned ceramic revival, where even the smallest pieces embody precision, symbolism, and aesthetic refinement.
The first jar is a 2.5" seed jar decorated with a bold hand-painted turkey motif in black on a textured natural clay ground. Deep red polished bands form triangular panels framing the design, adding contrast and elegance. The turkey, a frequent subject in Mata Ortiz art, carries symbolic resonance while showcasing the potter’s meticulous skill.
The second jar, signed by Marcela Olivas, measures 1.75 x 1.75 inches and was hand-coiled from marbled reddish-tan clay. Its surface features bold black geometric motifs, the painted designs contrasting with the swirling natural clay body. Olivas, a respected name among Mata Ortiz potters, continues the tradition of innovation and craftsmanship inspired by the ancient Casas Grandes (Paquimé) culture.
Together, these miniature jars demonstrate the diversity of form and style within Mata Ortiz pottery, offering collectors a distinctive set that embodies both tradition and individual artistry.
