Casas Grandes Seated Human Effigy Jar w/ Relief Limbs
A striking Casas Grandes (Paquimé region, Chihuahua, Mexico) seated human effigy jar. Hand-coiled in buff clay, the vessel features modeled human arms in relief, a broad face with incised details, and bold polychrome decoration in red and black over cream slip. Geometric motifs including stepped and zigzag designs are characteristic of Casas Grandes iconography, combining symbolic meaning with masterful craftsmanship.
Effigy jars with applied limbs are rare within the tradition, making this example particularly notable. Comparable vessels are represented in major institutions, including the Smithsonian (Catalog No. 4/7234). With its expressive sculptural presence and vibrant painted surface, this piece reflects the artistry and ritual significance of the Casas Grandes culture.
Condition
Good overall with age-appropriate wear. A 4-inch crack is present along the backside. The left arm is chipped, and several small chips are visible on the face. Minor surface losses and abrasions are consistent with antiquity. Despite these issues, the vessel remains stable and displays beautifully, with much of the polychrome decoration intact.
