Description

Alejandra Cota – Mata Ortiz Snake Motif Pot, Hand-Coiled & Painted

This striking Mata Ortiz pottery vase is signed by Alejandra Cota, showcasing masterful hand-coiling, hand-painting, and delicately etched (sgraffito-like) detailing. The marbled or mottled reddish-brown clay body provides a rich backdrop for contrasting black, cream, and ochre geometric bands. A sinuous snake motif—rendered with poised precision—wraps around the vessel, embodying both aesthetic elegance and cultural symbolism. The form balances a full, rounded base with a gently flared neck, exuding both sculptural presence and traditional craftsmanship.

This piece represents the celebrated Mata Ortiz tradition from northern Chihuahua, Mexico—an artistic movement rooted in the revival of ancient Casas Grandes pottery—characterized by refined, contemporary expressions of ancestral motifs.
