Jesus Tena Mata Ortiz Blackware Jar – Hand-Coiled, Incised Geometric Design
A hand-coiled blackware pottery jar by Jesus Tena, a distinguished Mata Ortiz artist known for his precise etched geometric patterns and elegant burnished finishes. The jar features a rounded body with flared rim, decorated with finely incised feather, starburst, and linear motifs in contrasting matte and polished black. Signed “Jesus Tena” on the underside, this work reflects the enduring craftsmanship of the Casas Grandes ceramic tradition.
Though it bears a rim chip, the piece remains an excellent cabinet display piece, as the damage is positioned in such a way that it is not visible when placed upright. Condition
Fair condition. A 1 5/8-inch rim chip is present (shown in final photo), along with shelf wear and minor surface marks consistent with age and use. Importantly, the damage does not affect display value, as it remains hidden when the vessel is upright.
