East German DDR Ammo Crates – 7.62 mm M43, Dovetail, Hinged Lid
Pair of authentic Cold War–era East German (DDR) military ammunition crates, produced before the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. These rugged wooden crates were built for Warsaw Pact logistics, originally holding 7.62×39mm M43 steel-cased cartridges. Each is constructed with dovetail joinery, heavy steel handles, and hinged, latching tops. Stenciled markings include “1360 Stück 7.62mm Patr. M43 mit Stahlhülse,” along with DDR factory and TGL technical codes, confirming their East German origin and military issue.
Highly collectible as Cold War militaria, these crates also serve as distinctive display or storage pieces with strong industrial appeal. Their provenance ties directly to East Germany’s role in the Warsaw Pact, making them prized by military historians, collectors, and enthusiasts alike.
Condition
Good original condition consistent with military use: chipped corners (one lid with a ~1.5″ chip), scuffs, paint splatter, and surface wear. Hinges and latches remain functional. Structurally solid and visually compelling.
