Ithaca Calendar Clock Co. No. 3½ “Parlor” Double-Dial Calendar Clock, c.1881, With Key & Etched Beveled Glass Pendulum
An outstanding example of the Ithaca Calendar Clock Co.’s craftsmanship, this No. 3½ “Parlor” Double-Dial Calendar Clock (c.1881) combines horological innovation with Victorian elegance. Patented by Henry B. Horton on April 18, 1865, and August 28, 1866, the perpetual calendar mechanism automatically adjusts for varying month lengths and leap years. The upper dial, with Roman numerals on a black paper face, displays the time; the lower dial reveals the month and day of the week through rotating drums, with reverse-painted numerals encircling the perimeter to indicate the date.
Housed in a solid walnut case accented by ebonized turned columns, ornate spandrels, and a finely carved crest, the clock retains its etched beveled glass pendulum bob, an iconic Ithaca hallmark. Inside, an 8-day time-and-strike brass movement—likely by E.N. Welch—powers the clock, striking the hour and half-hour on a clear bell. Comes complete with original winding key.
