Description

Bob Cooper “Deer Dancer” Patinated Copper Wall Sculpture – Framed

Striking patinated copper wall sculpture titled Deer Dancer by Santa Fe artist Bob Cooper. Rendered in high relief, the piece depicts a ceremonial dancer with antlered headdress, turquoise-hued garments, and bead necklace, holding two staff-like poles wrapped in twine. The warm copper undertones show through the verdigris finish, adding depth and movement. Mounted within a shadowbox-style frame with linen matting, the sculpture bears a brass title plaque and the artist’s name. The reverse features the artist’s stamp and a personalized inscription.

Bob Cooper – Santa Fe Metal Sculptor
Bob Cooper is a Santa Fe–based artist celebrated for his “Copper Images” series—dynamic, high-relief wall sculptures in oxidized and patinated copper. His hand-shaped works, marked by richly textured verdigris surfaces and warm metallic undertones, reflect the heritage and landscape of the American Southwest. Based in New Mexico’s art capital, Cooper has earned a devoted following among collectors for his ability to merge fine craftsmanship with cultural storytelling.

The “Deer Dancer”
This subject draws from the sacred traditions of the Yaqui (Yoeme) and Mayo peoples of northern Mexico and the American Southwest. The Deer Dance is a ceremonial performance honoring the deer’s sacrifice, symbolizing harmony between humanity and nature, and often presented during Lenten or Easter observances blending Indigenous and Catholic traditions. In Cooper’s rendition, the antlers, ceremonial attire, and turquoise patina echo this rich symbolism, while the dancer’s poised stance captures the rhythm and vitality of the ritual.
