Description

Bronze Moko/Nekara Pejeng Rain Drum – Zodiac & Star Motif, 19"

Bronze rain drum in the Moko/Nekara Pejeng style of Southeast Asia, notable for its hourglass form, flared rim, and four pierced loop handles. The tympanum features an eight-pointed starburst encircling a central medallion, with the rare addition of zodiac animal figures in the surrounding ring—an uncommon decorative adaptation blending traditional islander craftsmanship with Chinese astrological symbolism. The body is embellished with raised floral scrollwork and geometric elements, finished in a naturally weathered green-blue patina.

Historically, such drums served as prestige objects and ceremonial dowry items across the Sunda Islands, valued for symbolic and social roles more than music-making. This example is a slightly smaller, lighter variant compared to typical historical examples (commonly ~21.5" tall, ~12" top diameter, ~16.5 lbs). At 19" tall, 11.5" in diameter, and 12 lbs, it retains the classic proportions but with thinner casting—ideal for decorative display while preserving the cultural form. The unusual zodiac detailing adds both visual and cultural depth, making it a standout piece for collectors of ethnographic or cross-cultural decorative arts.

Condition:
Good, with finish wear and patina consistent with outdoor display. Surface shows oxidation and weathering throughout, enhancing its decorative character.

Dimensions:
Height: 19 inches
Diameter (top): 11.5 inches
Weight: 12 lbs
