Set of 3 Handwoven Zulu Ukhamba Baskets – Hlengiwe Khuzwayo, KwaZulu/Natal
A striking set of three traditional Zulu ukhamba baskets, skillfully handwoven by artisan Hlengiwe Khuzwayo in KwaZulu/Natal, South Africa. Made from Ilala palm fibers, these lidded, bulb-shaped baskets were traditionally used for storing liquids such as home-brewed beer. The tight coil weave, natural waterproofing, and bold geometric designs—dyed with pigments from roots, leaves, and bark—reflect generations of cultural artistry. Patterns include feminine diamond motifs and strong zigzag elements, each carrying symbolic meaning.
Each basket is unique in size, pattern, and weave, the result of up to a month’s meticulous handcrafting. They are both functional and highly collectible, perfect for display or as a conversation piece in any interior.
Condition:
Very good condition overall. Weaving is tight and lids fit well. Natural variations in color and texture are inherent to handmade items and add to their authenticity.
