Artist Biography: Daryl Howard
Daryl Howard (born 1949, Texas) is a distinguished American woodblock printmaker renowned for her mastery of traditional Japanese mokuhanga techniques infused with contemporary sensibilities. After earning her BFA in 1970 from Sam Houston State University, she lived and taught art in Tokyo during the early 1970s. There she discovered antique Ukiyo‑e prints and apprenticed under master printmaker Hodaka Yoshida, developing deep fluency in the meticulous carving and hand-printing methods passed down through generations.
Upon returning to the United States in 1976, Howard pursued graduate studies at the University of Texas at Austin. She further expanded her artistic vocabulary through richly layered mixed-media collages that incorporate handmade papers, earth pigments, metallic leaf (gold, silver, copper), and gemstones—often integrated with segments of antique woodblock prints. Throughout her career, Howard has traveled internationally—to locales such as Indonesia, Greece, Mexico, and China—drawing inspiration from diverse cultures and landscapes, often reflected in her serene depictions of architecture and natural scenes.
Howard lives and works on a ranch outside Austin, Texas, where she continues to handcraft limited-edition prints using bold handmade pigments and fine metals to enrich texture and color. Many of her pieces include hand-applied copper, silver, or 22‑karat gold leaf, lending each edition a luminous, meditative quality. Her work is held in over 75 public and private collections across the United States, and she remains one of the country’s few practitioners of classic Ukiyo‑e woodblock printmaking.
