Description

James R. Ochs “Portrait of Gay” Limited Edition Intaglio — 2/30

Portrait of Gay is a rare, low-numbered limited edition intaglio print by American artist James R. Ochs (1943–2022), a master of poetic and textural portraiture. Rendered in earthy browns, deep greens, and black, the work captures a contemplative profile accented by Ochs’ signature crosshatch textures. The print is hand-titled at the lower left, signed at the lower right, and numbered 2/30 at center. Beautifully presented under a white mat in a gold-tone metal frame, protected by UV-filtering glass to preserve its vivid tones and fine detail.

Ochs’ works are celebrated for blending figuration with abstraction, creating images that are at once lyrical, mystical, and emotionally resonant. This example reflects his mastery of intaglio techniques and his ability to infuse human presence with psychological depth, making it a strong choice for collectors of contemporary portraiture.

Artist Biography:
James R. Ochs was born in Denver, Colorado, and pursued formal training at Colorado State University (B.A., Painting) and the University of Iowa (M.A. & M.F.A., Printmaking & Drawing). He refined his skills at Blacks Print Studio in New York City and the Art Students League, studying under master printmakers and painters. Over a career spanning three decades, he operated Ochs Studio as both a teaching and printmaking facility, while exhibiting in more than 120 national, regional, and solo shows.

His works are held in prestigious collections, including the Des Moines Art Center, Harvard College, Brown University, the U.S. Congress, and the Muscatine Art Center. Known for his poetic approach to portraiture, Ochs sought to “contrast things within the figure… to make it more poetic and mystical, as opposed to something very classical.” His art remains highly valued for its technical excellence, layered textures, and deep emotional resonance.

Market Context:
Comparable intaglio and mixed media works by Ochs are valued in the $2,600–$4,400 range when framed, with richly colored, figurative works often commanding the higher end. This scarce early-numbered edition is well-positioned for strong collector interest.

Condition:
Good overall, with vibrant color retention. Small 1/8" stain to the upper right matting. Frame with minor wear.

Size:
Overall: 23" x 22"
Visible image: 18" x 18"
