Description

D. Andrew Rodriguez 1995 Terra Cotta Bas‑Relief Deer Dancer — Signed, Framed

Vivid and deeply dimensional, this 1995 terra cotta bas‑relief by Laguna Pueblo artist D. Andrew Rodriguez depicts a ceremonial Deer Dancer in mid‑performance. The dancer’s antlered headgear, expressive face, hands, moccasins, and traditional rattles emerge in high relief from the clay surface, creating a powerful sense of movement and presence. Rodriguez masterfully conveys the moment as the figure steps forth from the flat plane, bridging the spiritual and physical worlds that the Deer Dance embodies.

The clay surface carries a warm earthen tone with a subtle micaceous sparkle, enhancing its depth and vitality. Presented in a high‑quality carved wood frame with a braided‑rope style border and double matting, the work is both artistically and aesthetically complete, ready for display. Signed and dated lower right.

About the Artist:

D. Andrew Rodriguez (Laguna Pueblo) is acclaimed for his sculptural terra cotta bas‑reliefs rooted in Pueblo ceremonial tradition. He studied under legendary sculptor Allan Houser at the Institute of American Indian Arts and earned his BFA with distinction from the University of New Mexico. Rodriguez’s work is celebrated for figures that seem to emerge from the clay itself, capturing the energy and spirit of Native dance. His sculptures have been exhibited nationally, collected internationally, and honored with SWAIA fellowships for artistic excellence.
