Description

Large Buffalo Kachina (Mosairu) — 32" Hand-Carved Wood with Fur, Feathers & Pomegranate

This Buffalo Kachina (Mosairu) stands an impressive 32 inches tall — far larger than most examples, which typically range from 8 to 18 inches. Such scale is rare, making this piece a commanding presence for display and a sought-after prize for serious collectors. Its size also reflects the significant time, skill, and care invested in its creation, elevating it from a simple carving to a full ceremonial portrayal.

The Buffalo Kachina, also known as Mosairu or the White Buffalo Dancer, is among the most sacred figures in Hopi tradition. Appearing in winter ceremonies, it blesses the community with strength, fertility, and abundance. The buffalo is seen as a provider — offering food, shelter, and tools — and as a spiritual protector. This carving captures that powerful symbolism in meticulous detail: a buffalo-horn headdress adorned with feathers and fur; boldly painted polka-dot arm and leg designs; a decorated kilt with vibrant geometric and floral motifs; leather fringe; shell necklaces; and natural fur trim. In place of the original rattle, the figure holds a dried pomegranate, likely a later replacement that adds to its story and character.

The artist’s craftsmanship is evident in the lifelike stance and expressive face, evoking the rhythm and movement of the ceremonial dance. The carving is mounted on a solid 1.5-inch thick natural wood base for stability and display impact.

Materials:
Wood, leather, shells, feathers, fur, pomegranate

Dimensions:
32 x 18 x 11 inches (Height x Width x Depth)

Condition:
Fair condition with moderate wear. Old repair to left arm with visible glue at the rear, scuffing, and fur loss throughout, including a section absent from the face. Original objects from hands are missing; pomegranate likely replaced the original rattle. Natural split to the back. Despite these flaws, the figure remains solid, stable, and displays impressively. Presented as found.

Large Hopi Buffalo Kachinas of this size and detail rarely come to market. Whether showcased in a collection or displayed as a cultural centerpiece, this striking work offers both artistic beauty and deep traditional meaning.
