Blackware Pottery Bear – Black-on-Black, Slip Cast, Painted
Stylized blackware pottery bear sculpture in the Santa Clara Pueblo tradition, executed in the classic black-on-black style pioneered by Pueblo potters in the early 20th century. This contemporary interpretation features a slip-mold cast form with hand-painted matte geometric designs contrasting against a polished black surface. The bear, a revered symbol of strength, courage, and protection in Native American culture, is rendered here with smooth, minimalist contours and a modern aesthetic.
While inspired by centuries-old Pueblo techniques, the piece reflects a contemporary sensibility, blending traditional symbolism with refined, sculptural form. The underside of the leg bears an indiscernible signature.
Condition:
Good condition with no chips or cracks. Light surface wear from age and display. Signature is faint and indiscernible on the underside of the leg.
