Victorian Marble-Top Washstand with Beveled Mirror & Floral Tile Backsplash, c. 1890–1900
This Victorian marble-top washstand beautifully captures the elegance and practicality of the late 19th century. The 1″ thick marble countertop—in richly mottled tones of rose, white, and soft grey—was chosen for both beauty and durability, serving as a refined surface for personal grooming in an era before indoor plumbing was universal. Beneath the marble, the case features two hand-cut dovetail drawers fitted with brass handles, a testament to fine cabinetmaking skill.
Above the marble rises a removable gallery back, graced with a beveled glass mirror framed in decorative scrollwork and topped by a fan-shaped crest. Beneath the mirror, a floral ceramic tile backsplash provides a burst of Victorian artistry, with warm golden, burgundy, and green tones framed in a geometric border. These tiles were as practical as they were decorative, protecting the wall from splashes while adding an unmistakable flourish of period style.
The whole is supported on 2″ turned legs with original porcelain casters, a lower shelf positioned 13½″ from the floor providing additional storage. This thoughtful balance of design and function made such washstands a staple in fine homes of the era. Today, its uses extend beyond its original purpose—it would make a striking entry table, powder room vanity, or decorative accent in any setting.
