Description

Mid‑Century Navajo Sandcast Silver Buckle with Natural Turquoise

A refined example of mid-20th century Navajo sandcast silverwork, this belt buckle showcases sculptural openwork in hefty sterling silver, gently softened by rich patination and circulation-worn highlights. Hand-poured into sand-carved molds, the sandcasting technique yields fluid, organic forms that are unmistakably artisan-made.

At the center lies a bezel-set natural turquoise cabochon (11.82 × 14.85 mm) featuring a harmonious green-blue matrix.

Emerging in the early 20th century, sandcasting became a defining Navajo silversmithing method, enabling large-format pieces with architectural and free-form detail . The mid-century period saw Navajo artisans pairing this rugged silver framework with symbolic turquoise, valued for its spiritual significance in Navajo culture—protection, healing, and connection to the living earth.

Condition

In good vintage condition with light surface scratches and even patina throughout. The turquoise is secure in its bezel. We have left the original finish intact; any polishing is left to the discretion of the purchaser.
