Description

1976 Tunisian ONAT Wool Tapestry – Handwoven Folk Art, 56x24"

This vibrant handwoven wool tapestry was produced in May 1976 by the Office National de l’Artisanat Tunisien (ONAT), Tunisia’s official agency for traditional crafts. Certified as “1er Choix” (First Choice) and labeled “Points Noués Main,” the piece was entirely hand-knotted using local wool. The composition features twelve colorful abstract and geometric panels, each reflecting North African folk art traditions with a distinctly mid-century modern aesthetic. Shades of red, pink, green, yellow, blue, and cream create bold contrast against a rust-colored field.

Still affixed are two original ONAT certification tags, validating its authenticity and production by a state-recognized artisan. Pieces like this were commonly produced for international export and cultural representation during the 1970s, making this an excellent example of certified Tunisian textile craftsmanship.

A striking decorative statement, this tapestry can be displayed vertically or horizontally as a wall hanging, offering collectors a window into 20th-century North African artisan traditions.

Condition:

Fair condition overall, with moderate wear and visible staining/discoloration across several sections, as shown in photos. There is age-related soiling, and the piece would benefit from a professional cleaning. Wool pile is intact with no structural damage. The original ONAT and quality control labels remain firmly attached, though creased and worn. Fringes are present at both ends.

Dimensions:

56 x 24 inches
