A matched pair of mid-century African wall plaques, each expertly hand-carved from a single solid piece of wood. Depicting stylized male and female busts in profile, these relief carvings feature incised detailing, elongated features, and traditional Yoruba-style hair and neck ornamentation—hallmarks of West African aesthetic traditions. Likely made in the 1960s–70s, these pieces were crafted for both cultural expression and export, common in mid-20th century artisan markets. The female plaque shows a lighter, natural wood tone, while the male displays a deeper patina, enhancing their visual contrast. Each is fitted with a metal hanger on the reverse for wall display.
Condition
In good condition overall, with no damage. Some natural surface variations and color shifts are present, consistent with vintage age and hand-carving. Both plaques are structurally sound and ready for hanging.
