Description

Lisa Emmett Painted Tarahumara Dough Bowl — Pueblo Scene, Signed

This hand-carved Tarahumara dough bowl has been transformed into a unique piece of Southwestern folk art by Lisa Emmett, whose signature appears at the base of the painted scene. The bowl itself was originally carved from native wood—likely pine or oak—by Tarahumara artisans of northern Mexico. Traditionally used in food preparation, these utilitarian vessels were never discarded, even when damaged. Instead, as seen here, they were thoughtfully repaired with leather ties, tin patches, and iron staples.

The front features a vivid depiction of a multi-story adobe pueblo with drying chili ristras, wooden ladders, and mountain peaks in the distance—hallmarks of our New Mexico landscape. The back retains evidence of age and use, including a deep vertical crack stabilized by indigenous repair techniques. Emmett’s included note explains the cultural background of the bowls and her artistic process.

A striking fusion of Native craftsmanship and regional painting, this signed piece is both a cultural artifact and a decorative work of art.

Condition:
In good condition with surface wear and age cracks consistent with its functional origin. The wood displays an appealing patina, and the bowl has been repaired in the traditional Tarahumara style using leather, metal, and cord. The painted surface remains vivid, with minor interruptions where the wood has split. Structurally sound and visually engaging.

Dimensions:
Approximately 22 x 17 x 5 inches
