Ronald Shroulote Signed Hopi Salako (Shalako) Kachina – Hand-Carved Rain Spirit, 15.5"
This remarkable Hopi Salako (also spelled Shalako) Kachina doll is an exceptional work by Ronald Shroulote, a skilled carver known for his culturally faithful and spiritually rich representations of Katsinam. Expertly hand-carved from cottonwood root and painted in traditional natural pigments, this 15.5-inch tall figure depicts Salako Taka, the male Cloud Messenger Spirit—one of the most sacred and rarely portrayed beings in Hopi ceremonial life.
Salako represents the towering rain-bringer and spiritual intercessor between earth and sky, traditionally honored during spring and summer dances in both Hopi and Zuni traditions. His appearance is believed to bring blessings of fertility, agricultural abundance, and harmony with nature. Because of his divine stature and ceremonial importance, Salako is seldom carved outside ritual contexts—making pieces like this especially rare and meaningful.
The figure’s tall, vertical posture, incised feather headdress, and elongated garment are all consistent with traditional depictions of Salako Taka. The tiered dress-like robe—with its layered banding and scalloped carving—echoes ceremonial mantas and serves as a symbol of reverence and continuity. Accents in green, turquoise, and sienna highlight the elemental power Salako embodies: cloud, rain, and life-giving wind.
Signed “R. Shroulote” and inscribed “Salako” on the underside of the natural wood base, this carving carries the authenticity and detail associated with Ronald Shroulote’s best-known work from the late 20th century.
More than a collectible, this Kachina is a cultural bridge—inviting viewers to connect with Hopi spiritual values and to appreciate the artistry and meaning behind katsina traditions. A striking centerpiece for any serious collector of Native American or ethnographic art.
