Boris Mestchersky, Côte d’Azur: Winding Road, 1921 – Oil on Canvas
A rare early oil painting by Prince Boris Alekseevich Mestchersky (1889–1957), Côte d’Azur: Winding Road captures a sunlit Mediterranean landscape rendered in bold compositional planes and rhythmic shadow. Signed and dated "Mestchersky 21," the work was executed during the artist’s formative years in Paris—just prior to his pivotal contributions to religious and theatrical art.
Mestchersky was born into Russian nobility in St. Petersburg in 1889. After initial studies in law, he devoted himself to the arts, training under Maurice Denis and at the Académie Ranson in Paris. A devout spiritualist and formalist, he co-founded a religious art workshop with Denis and Joseph Devalière in the early 1920s. Though best known for ecclesiastical murals and stage design, Mestchersky also painted a small number of atmospheric landscapes, of which this 1921 canvas is a rare surviving example.
In 1937, he immigrated to the United States, relinquishing his royal title and continuing his career as a painter and scenic designer. His 1939 mural Industry and Agriculture in the Eaton Rapids post office was commissioned by the U.S. Treasury Section of Fine Arts and reflects his ongoing interest in integrating art with architecture and public life.
Painted during his early Parisian period, Côte d’Azur: Winding Road balances stylized foliage, crisp architectural forms, and a glowing Mediterranean palette—hallmarks of his transitional style before fully embracing large-scale commissions. It is presented in a finely carved giltwood frame and stands as a unique intersection of private vision and public legacy.
