Description

Hopi Owl Mon Gwa Kachina by Richard — Hand Carved & Painted, 12"

A commanding hand-carved Hopi Owl Kachina (Mon Gwa), signed “Richard,” representing one of the more complex and symbolically rich figures in Hopi ceremonial tradition. Revered as an enforcer of discipline and a guardian of crops, the Owl Kachina also embodies intelligence, vigilance, and ancestral authority.

This finely executed carving stands 12 inches tall and is rendered in cottonwood root, the traditional medium for authentic Hopi katsinam. The figure assumes a deep, crouched posture—suggesting readiness and movement—its arms outstretched beneath an elaborate mantle of incised feathers. The wings, collar, and headdress are intricately detailed with rhythmic herringbone patterns, each feather individually carved and darkly stained for contrast. The articulated plume and frontal beak add sculptural dimension to the stylized owl mask, while the hand-painted sash introduces traditional palette notes of umber, black, and red.

While the carver “Richard” is not further identified, the work reflects deep fluency in Hopi iconography and carving tradition, consistent with high-quality mid- to late-20th century katsina figures.

Condition:
In good condition, with minor losses to the tips of several carved feathers. Structural integrity is sound, and painted elements remain sharp and well defined.
