American Southwest — Navajo Artist, Hopi-Inspired Kachina Style
Vera Hudson is a Navajo carver who created Hopi-style Kachina dolls—a common practice among Navajo artisans, particularly in the mid-to-late 20th century. While traditional Kachina figures originate from the Hopi people, Navajo artists like Hudson often adopted these motifs for the tourist and collector markets, blending cultural respect with commercial craftsmanship.
The materials (hand-carved wood, fur, feathers, leather, bells, beads, shell, and coral), stylistic elements (dramatic wingspan, ceremonial regalia), and signed bark-base are all consistent with post-1945 Southwestern Native American craft traditions, especially those produced in Arizona and New Mexico.
