18th–19th C Indian Colonial Teak Shutters — Brass & Iron Hardware
A pair of antique Indian teak wood shutters with original frame, notes from our client indicate they date from circa 1750–1850 during the British colonial era. These doors reflect a compelling fusion of European symmetry and Indian craftsmanship, likely originating from regions such as Gujarat or Madhya Pradesh. Made from solid, dense teak, the shutters feature deep ribbed panel carvings, layered paint remnants in weathered blue and green tones, and early iron and brass hardware. The brass drop handles and forged iron latch show typical Anglo-Indian stylistic influence, while the timeworn patina across both sides evokes centuries of architectural use.
The doors are housed in their original hardwood jamb, allowing for installation as functional interior doors or dramatic architectural wall décor. Their asymmetrical swing and presence of later hardware repairs suggest they were updated and repurposed over time—common with salvaged architectural pieces of this age.
Condition:
Good condition overall with age-appropriate wear. Areas of chipped paint, scuffing, and surface cracking are present, along with some more recent hardware additions. The doors do not open evenly, and wear from use is visible throughout, especially near the latch and frame edges. Structurally stable and visually striking. See images for full condition details.
