Greek Copper Wall Plaque ‘Hermes of Praxiteles’, 13⅝″
Struck in heavy copper and finished with a deep smoked-black patina, this sizeable round wall plaque presents a high-relief profile of Hermes, after the celebrated 4th-century BC marble by Praxiteles (legend cast at right). The broad rim is chased with linked clusters of grapes and vines—an allusion to Dionysus, the infant carried by Hermes in the original sculpture. A hand-painted “MADE IN GREECE” mark and built-in D-ring confirm mid-20th-century Greek workshop production geared to discerning travelers. Measuring over 13 inches across yet only 1 inch deep, it delivers instant classical presence to a study, library, or eclectic gallery wall.
Condition
Good vintage condition with scattered surface scratches, rubs, and small patina losses to the high points, all consistent with normal handling. No dents, cracks, or repairs; hanger is secure (see photos).
