Description

16" Costa Rican Blackware Pottery Vase – Wildlife Motif

This large, visually compelling blackware pottery vase likely originates from Costa Rica, drawing influence from the traditional Chorotega ceramic styles of the Guaitil region. Etched with vivid representations of tropical wildlife—including parrots and a monkey—amid dense foliage, the piece showcases the hand-incised decorative technique passed down through generations. The surface features a polished black finish with warm red undertones exposed through sgraffito carving. Though unsigned, its style and iconography are consistent with Guaitil craftsmanship, celebrated for symbolic animal motifs and natural clay pigmentation.

Condition:
In good condition overall, with visible wear. Surface shows some scratches and moderate shelf wear, particularly near the base. The structure is intact, and the incised designs remain sharp and visually engaging. No chips or cracks observed. Please refer to photos for close-up condition.

Dimensions:
Height: 16 inches
Diameter: 9 inches
Weight: 6 lbs 13.5 oz
