Description

JB & SM Knowles Sterling Silver Ladle – Pattern No. 48, Rococo Revival, 60.9g

An ornate sterling silver ladle by JB & SM Knowles of Providence, Rhode Island, marked with pattern number “48” and featuring the company’s hallmark and lion passant. This piece dates to the late 19th century, during the firm’s peak production years between 1875 and 1905. Known for their richly decorated sterling silver, JB & SM Knowles specialized in flatware and hollowware with highly detailed motifs.

This example is a fine showcase of Rococo Revival style, with a deeply scalloped bowl and an elaborately scrolled handle featuring floral and foliate elements in high relief. The form and detailing reflect the company’s commitment to craftsmanship during America’s Gilded Age.

A substantial piece weighing 60.9 grams (1.96 troy ounces), this ladle measures 7 inches long and would serve elegantly for sauces or gravies, or as a refined display item in a silver collection. JB & SM Knowles was later absorbed by Mauser Manufacturing Co. in 1905, making surviving pieces increasingly scarce and collectible.

Condition:
In good condition, with expected surface scuffing and minor dents from use. The piece has not been polished, retaining natural patina. Hallmarks are clear and the structure remains sound.
