Jennifer Naranjo Santa Clara Blackware Pot – Carved Avanyu Design, Signed
This hand-coiled blackware pottery jar is signed by Jennifer Naranjo of the Santa Clara Pueblo and features the traditional Avanyu (water serpent) motif. The vessel showcases the classic deep black sheen associated with Santa Clara pottery, with the design deeply carved into the surface—a hallmark of the pueblo's ceramic artistry. The Avanyu design is a sacred symbol in Pueblo culture, representing water and life—a powerful motif rendered here with striking precision and symmetry.
Jennifer Naranjo, born in 1955 at San Juan Pueblo, has been actively potting since the late 1970s. She learned the art from her mother-in-law, Reycita Naranjo, a well-known potter at Santa Clara. Jennifer has earned numerous awards for her figures and carving work over the years, including recognition at the Santa Fe Indian Market since 1990.
Signed on the base: “Jennifer Naranjo, Santa Clara.” A strong example of contemporary Pueblo craftsmanship in a compact and collectible form.
