Laverne Loretto Tosa Jemez Pueblo Pottery — Signed, 3.5” Tall
A finely crafted hand-coiled and stone-polished pottery vessel by Laverne Loretto Tosa (b. 1964), a respected potter from the Jemez Pueblo in New Mexico. Signed on the base L. Loretto Tosa, Jemez N.M., this piece exemplifies traditional Jemez Pueblo techniques, featuring precise geometric motifs in natural clay tones and matte black. The vessel's compact form and scalloped rim with a stepped cutout reflect the cultural symbolism often present in Jemez pottery, representing the stages of life: birth, life, and death.
Tosa, a member of the Fire Clan, has been creating pottery since 1985, utilizing materials sourced from her reservation. Her work is known for its blend of traditional methods and contemporary designs, making her pieces highly sought after by collectors.
