Description

Lois & Derek Gutierrez de la Cruz Santa Clara Polychrome Pottery Jar

This hand-coiled polychrome pottery jar is a collaborative work by Santa Clara Pueblo artists Lois and Derek Gutierrez de la Cruz. Decorated with bold geometric feather motifs in black, white, and sienna over a rich red slip, the jar showcases the couple’s signature use of color and line rooted in Pueblo design traditions. The form is compact and balanced, with a smoothly polished surface and classic Santa Clara proportions.

Lois Gutierrez comes from a distinguished Santa Clara pottery family. Her mother, Petra Gutierrez, and her sisters—including Gloria Garcia (Goldenrod), Thelma Talachy, Lupita Gutierrez, and Minnie Vigil—are all respected potters within the Pueblo community. Derek de la Cruz, also of Santa Clara heritage, works alongside Lois; while each artist creates individually, many of their pieces are joint efforts, fired together and often signed “LOIS – DEREK.” Their collaborative works are admired for their fine detailing, lively palettes, and dedication to cultural continuity. Their artistry has been documented by institutions such as the National Museum of the American Indian and represented by galleries in Santa Fe.

This piece reflects both artists’ shared commitment to sustaining Pueblo ceramic traditions while expressing a distinct and vibrant voice.

Condition:

In good condition with no chips or cracks. Minor shelf wear is visible, particularly on the base, but does not detract from display. The surface shows some natural firing variation and light signs of handling.
