Tom Polacca Hopi Carved Pottery Jar — Figural & Geometric Motifs

This exceptional hand-carved pottery jar is signed by Tom Polacca (1935–2003), an influential Hopi-Tewa artist widely recognized for transforming traditional Hopi pottery into a deeply narrative art form. A self-taught potter since 1955 and grandson of the renowned Nampeyo, Polacca pioneered a distinctive deep-carved polychrome style, portraying murals of Hopi religious scenes and sacred ceremonies directly onto his vessels. This jar highlights his hallmark technique with intricately carved human figures, geometric motifs, and warm earth-tone finishes, combining cultural storytelling with a contemporary aesthetic.

A collectible piece signed “Tom Polacca” on the base, this jar reflects Polacca’s dedication to preserving Hopi traditions while innovating through form and narrative. Fired in a kiln to achieve his signature modern finish, it features favorite motifs such as kachina dancers and mudheads, symbolizing his deep connection to Hopi ceremonial life. An outstanding example of his mastery, this vessel adds historic and artistic value to any Native American art collection or Southwestern interior.

Artist Biography

Tom Polacca (1935–2003) was a self-taught Hopi-Tewa potter who began working in clay in 1955. Grandson of the iconic Nampeyo and son of Fannie Polacca, he carried forward his family’s legacy while introducing groundbreaking innovations. Specializing in deeply carved polychrome pottery, Polacca brought Hopi stories to life by carving and painting intricate murals depicting religious scenes, kachina dancers, and mudheads—his favorite subjects. He coiled pots in a wide variety of shapes and fired them in a kiln for a contemporary finish. His signature, “Tom Polacca,” is well-recognized by collectors and institutions alike. Part of a lineage that includes sister Iris Youvella Nampeyo, brother Harold Polacca, son Gary Polacca, and daughters Carla Claw and Elvira Naha, Tom Polacca remains a pivotal figure in the evolution of modern Hopi pottery.
