Attributed to Zdzieblowski, 1893 Oak Desk & Bookcase — 10 Drawers, 2 Keys
Attributed to Ladislaus Zdzieblowski (American, 1857–1929), this monumental solid oak desk and bookcase epitomizes the grandeur and refined craftsmanship of the American Renaissance Revival movement at the close of the 19th century. Likely produced in Chicago circa 1893 — contemporaneous with the city’s celebrated Columbian Exposition — this piece demonstrates the robust architectural presence and intricate ornamentation that defined Zdzieblowski’s known works. A closely related example resides in the permanent collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, underscoring this cabinetmaker’s significance within America’s decorative arts heritage.
The upper cabinet is crowned with a striking spindled gallery and flanked by finely turned balusters. Its twin paneled doors open to reveal four spacious fixed shelves, ideal for displaying cherished volumes or decorative objets d’art. Below, the generously proportioned writing desk offers a functional kneehole flanked by ten drawers of varying sizes, all fitted with brass escutcheons and period hardware. Two original keys accompany the piece, operating the door locks smoothly.
Elegant carved moldings, foliate scrollwork, and classical motifs enrich every panel and pilaster, testifying to the artisan’s skilled hand and the opulence favored by Chicago’s upper class at the time. The warm oak patina, developed over more than a century, enhances the depth and beauty of the finely grained wood.
Condition reflects its age and authentic use: finish wear, scattered chips, minor old repairs, glue residue at the feet, and an approximate ¼-inch gap to each drawer are noted. Despite these honest signs of history, the cabinet remains sturdy, handsome, and fully functional.
A commanding focal point for a distinguished library, office, or historic interior, this desk and bookcase offer both practical storage and a tangible link to America’s Gilded Age craftsmanship. Given its documented design lineage and impressive scale, it presents an exceptional opportunity for collectors of significant American furniture.
Condition:
In good, sturdy antique condition with age-consistent wear: finish loss, small chips, natural wood splitst. Each drawer shows an approximate ¼" gap and there are signs of old repairs, but all drawers and doors operate smoothly. Please see photos for a full condition overview.
