Vicente Hernández Vásquez Cross – Hand-Painted Oaxacan Folk Art
This vibrant hand-painted wooden cross is a creation of Vicente Hernández Vásquez, a renowned Oaxacan folk artist celebrated for his intricate alebrijes and religious-themed carvings. Crafted from copal wood—a material traditionally used in Oaxacan woodcarving—the cross features a richly detailed floral design in vivid hues of red, yellow, blue, and green against a deep cobalt background. The reverse side is painted a soft ochre and bears the artist's signature in blue script.
Hernández Vásquez hails from San Martín Tilcajete, a town famed for its woodcarving artisans. His works are known for their meticulous craftsmanship and have been featured in various collections and exhibitions. This piece, equipped with a metal loop for easy hanging, serves as both a devotional object and a striking decorative accent.
