Herón Martínez Mendoza Barro Negro Vessel w/ Applied Birds – 12.5"
A striking Barro Negro ceramic vessel by renowned Mexican folk artist Herón Martínez Mendoza (1918–1990), known for his fantastical and whimsical forms. This sculptural piece features a bulbous body with applied bird figures in dynamic stances encircling the form, paired with a tall flared neck and three upward-reaching handles. The matte black finish is characteristic of the Barro Negro technique native to Oaxaca.
While this piece shows clear signs of age and wear, it retains the surreal and joyful energy typical of Mendoza’s decorative work, celebrated for merging function and imagination in clay. A collector’s piece reflecting mid-century Mexican folk art traditions.
