Kingdom of Italy Coin Trio (1863–1867)
A historically significant trio of 19th-century coins from the early years of the unified Kingdom of Italy, all issued under the reign of King Vittorio Emanuele II. This lot includes two bronze 10 Centesimi coins dated 1866 and 1867, alongside a silver 50 Centesimi dated 1863. Together, these coins illustrate Italy’s transition from a collection of regional states to a single nation under one monarch.
Included Coins:
- 1 x 10 Centesimi 1866 (Bronze): Obverse features a left-facing portrait of King Vittorio Emanuele II encircled by "VITTORIO EMANUELE II RE D'ITALIA". Reverse displays the denomination within an oak and laurel wreath, surmounted by a star and marked with the "N" mintmark for Naples.
- 1 x 10 Centesimi 1867 (Bronze): Similar design and mintmark, dated 1867, with consistent detail and natural age toning.
- 1 x 50 Centesimi 1863 (Silver): Smaller denomination struck in silver, showing the king’s bust on the obverse with date below. The reverse features the royal shield of the House of Savoy beneath a crown, surrounded by a detailed wreath and legend "REGNO D'ITALIA".
Metal Content:
- Bronze: 10 Centesimi coins
- Silver (.835 fineness typical): 50 Centesimi coin
Condition:
All coins exhibit honest circulation wear and original patina, with clear dates and legible inscriptions. The bronze coins show moderate surface wear consistent with their age; the silver coin retains good detail with attractive natural toning.
Historical Note:
King Vittorio Emanuele II (1820–1878) was pivotal in the Risorgimento — the movement for Italian unification. These coins circulated during the foundational years of the modern Italian state, making them excellent historical pieces for collectors.
Lot Highlights:
- Three authentic 19th-century Italian coins spanning 1863–1867
- Mixed metals: bronze and silver
- Original surfaces with visible royal portraits and heraldic motifs
- A tangible piece of Italy’s early national history
