Vintage Japanese Gold Silk Byōbu Screen — Signed Unsai, Mountain Landscape
This exquisite vintage Japanese four-panel folding byōbu screen features a tranquil hand-painted sansui-ga (mountain and water landscape) rendered on luminous gold silk. Depicting waterfalls cascading through flowering cherry trees, distant misty ridges, a thatched hut, and a solitary figure on a quiet path, the scene beautifully embodies traditional Japanese ideals of nature and solitude.
Signed Unsai (雲斎) with a red seal, this piece likely dates to the Showa era (circa 1950s–1980s) and reflects refined craftsmanship for upscale interiors. The reverse side displays an intricate geometric paper pattern. Measuring approximately 36 inches high by 66 inches wide, it serves as an elegant room divider or statement wall art.
A rare example of hand-painted gold silk byōbu, this screen offers timeless artistry and collectible value for connoisseurs of Japanese decor.
Condition:
In good vintage condition with minor age wear: light surface marks and a small tear on the back paper lining (visible in photos). These do not detract from the screen’s overall beauty and display impact. Please see all images for detailed views.
