Description

Persian Inlaid Backgammon & Chess Board — Mother of Pearl, Folding

A finely crafted folding backgammon and chess board, attributed to Persian artisanship and reflecting the rich marquetry traditions of the Middle East. This dual-purpose game board features a wood base inlaid with mother-of-pearl, bone, and dyed hardwood veneers arranged in intricate geometric patterns.

The interior reveals a detailed backgammon field with central mosaic medallions, while the exterior displays an elegant chessboard bordered by octagonal rosettes and mosaic trim. Every surface, including edges and corner bands, is adorned with precision inlay work. Its fold-out design is fitted with brass hardware and serves both as a functional game board and a decorative object.

Combining aesthetic beauty with cultural craftsmanship, this piece is a fine example of traditional Persian mosaic artistry—ideal for collectors, interior décor, or practical use.

Materials & Craftsmanship

  • Base: Walnut or fruitwood
  • Inlay: Mother-of-pearl (nacre), bone, dyed and natural hardwood
  • Technique: Hand-cut marquetry (mosaic inlay)
  • Design Style: Traditional Persian geometric and floral motifs

Condition
Good overall vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use. Notable chips throughout, some trim inlay missing, and looseness in the folding hardware. A section of inlay near one hinge is lifting or absent. The board remains structurally sound and folds and unfolds properly. Please refer to photos—soup can included for scale.
