15.5" Serene Splendor Japanese-Style Peacock Vase
This large hand-painted ceramic vase showcases an elegant peacock perched beneath a flowering tree, rendered in rich enamel tones and luminous gilding on a deep green speckled ground. The composition is a striking example of mid-20th century Japanese-inspired export ceramics, with extraordinary attention to the bird’s plumage—each feather carefully highlighted in white, turquoise, and yellow with stylized peacock eyes. The cherry blossom branches are detailed in metallic gold with tiny pink accent dots, creating a delicate and balanced scene. A painted iridescent "knot" on the tree mimics abalone but is fully painted—demonstrating the artisan's use of trompe-l'œil technique rather than inlay. The form is stately and symmetrical, with a flared lip and rounded shoulder tapering to a solid base finished in black.
Condition:
Good overall, with some surface wear, light scuffs, and minor scratches consistent with age and handling. The painted surface and gilding remain vivid and stable with no visible cracks or structural damage.
