Description

Hamilton MFG Co Oak Type Drawer w/ 89 Slots, Cast Iron Handle, Wall Display

Step back into the golden age of American printing with this authentic Hamilton MFG Co printer’s type drawer. Founded in 1880 in Two Rivers, Wisconsin, the Hamilton Manufacturing Company became the largest maker of wood type in the United States, supplying the booming print industry with durable, finely crafted furniture like this classic drawer.

This piece showcases Hamilton’s signature craftsmanship: a solid oak frame fastened with flathead screws and a sturdy cast iron handle proudly embossed “The Hamilton MFG Co Two Rivers Wis.” Inside are 89 original compartments ranging from 2" x 1¼" to 4" x 2¼", once used to meticulously store movable type for letterpress printing.

Adding unique character is an Allegheny Airlines luggage tag and hand-inscribed owner’s name on the reverse, connecting this historic drawer to mid-20th-century American travel lore. It comes fitted with wall-hanging hardware, ready to be enjoyed as a rustic display shelf, shadow box, or preserved as an industrial collectible.

Today, pieces like this are celebrated at the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum — a testament to the vital role they played in the evolution of graphic arts and printing.
