Pair of George Zee Hong Kong Carved Hardwood Stools — Lattice Drum Form

A refined pair of hand-carved hardwood stools by George Zee & Co., Ltd., a distinguished Hong Kong furniture maker active from the 1960s through the late 20th century. Known for their kiln-dried construction and exceptional joinery, George Zee pieces were highly regarded export furnishings, blending traditional Chinese craftsmanship with Western-functional design.

Each stool features an intricate openwork lattice motif—often referred to as a "coin" or drum form—composed of continuous interlocking loops that form a sculptural silhouette. The deep, reddish-brown hardwood exhibits a smooth polish and visible grain, consistent with the dense tropical woods favored by the firm, such as teak or camphorwood. The bases are shaped with subtle scroll feet, while the tops are smooth, flat, and versatile—suitable for use as accent tables or occasional seating.

George Zee employed classically trained artisans from Dongyang and Shanghai, whose expertise is evident in the symmetry and precision of each carved joint. The original brass maker’s tag is affixed to the underside of one stool, reading: “George Zee & Co., Ltd., Kiln Dried Art Carved Furniture, 12-27 Miramar Arcade, Kimberley Road, Kowloon H.K., Made in Hong Kong.”

Condition
In good condition overall, with visible signs of wear from use. Scuffing, finish wear, and several areas of exposed joints are present, consistent with age. The stools remain structurally stable, and the craftsmanship remains visually impactful.
