Qing Dynasty Red Lacquer Bentwood Hat Box, Painted Phoenix, 11.5" H
This authentic Qing Dynasty red lacquer bentwood hat box, dating to the late 19th century, exemplifies traditional Chinese folk craftsmanship. Cylindrical in form, it is richly finished in a warm red lacquer and adorned with hand-painted black ink decoration featuring a phoenix in flight among stylized floral and cloud motifs — classic symbols of good fortune and renewal. Hand-stitched bamboo splints reinforce the seam, showcasing time-honored joinery.
The lid lifts off to reveal spacious interior storage, historically used for hats or personal items. With its graceful form, storied patina, and rustic repairs, this piece adds a layer of cultural charm to any decor — serving beautifully as a unique storage, or a collector’s highlight.
Condition
Good antique condition with age-appropriate wear throughout. Notable scuffing and some areas of bubbled lacquer consistent with age and use. Hand-stitched bamboo splint joins remain stable and add authentic character. Please review all photos for details.
