Description

Dome Top Steamer Trunk c.1890 – Corbin Lock, Tooled Leather, Removable Tray

This authentic dome-top steamer trunk from the late 19th century is a richly detailed example of Victorian-era travel craftsmanship. Dome-top trunks — also called camelback trunks — were prized not only for their decorative beauty but also as status symbols, designed to sit atop luggage stacks during long rail or steamship voyages. Their curved lids discouraged stacking by others, helping preserve their ornate finishes.

This trunk features a hardwood and pressed-tin exterior, original tooled leather fragments with nautical and geometric designs, and windmill-shaped decorative metal mountings. The brass center lock is marked “Corbin Cabinet Lock Co., New Britain, Conn.” Both original leather side handles are intact.

The interior includes a removable tray and a vibrant chromolithograph floral panel on the inside lid, bordered with colorful printed trim.

Condition

In fair to good condition. The trunk shows age-related wear including leather loss, scuffs, and rusting to metal hardware. Interior lining is partially torn with water staining; tray dividers are fragile but present. The Corbin lock is intact (no key), and both original leather handles are still attached. Decorative elements retain charm despite visible age and use.
