Red Wing Union Stoneware 3-Gallon Jug – Wing Stamp, c. 1917–1936
This authentic 3-gallon stoneware jug was produced by the Red Wing Union Stoneware Company in Red Wing, Minnesota, between 1917 and 1936. It displays the iconic red wing stamp, cobalt blue number “3” denoting its capacity, and the distinctive oval maker’s mark: “RED WING UNION STONEWARE CO., RED WING, MINN.” A classic of American utilitarian design, this piece is formed in a light beige salt-glazed body with a hand-applied handle and original cork stopper.
The Red Wing Union Stoneware Company was established in 1906 through a merger of competing local potteries and became a dominant force in American stoneware. Known for its durable, functional wares, the company’s signature wing logo is a hallmark of quality. This jug reflects the era before refrigeration, when such pieces were essential for storing liquids like vinegar, molasses, or spirits.
A wonderful representation of early 20th-century domestic pottery, it combines utility, craftsmanship, and collectible appeal.
