1920s Griswold No. 9 Waffle Iron – Pat. 156N, Erie PA, Cast Iron Base
This is a Griswold No. 9 cast iron waffle iron, produced by the Griswold Manufacturing Company of Erie, Pennsylvania, and likely dating from the 1920s. The piece is marked “PAT’D 156N,” a reference to Griswold’s internal pattern number, not a formal patent. The base is separately numbered “157,” and the paddles include “PATENT APPL’D FOR” text—common in early Griswold castings.
The waffle iron consists of two circular waffle plates with spring-coiled handles, designed to rotate within a detachable cast iron ring base. The No. 9 size indicates a larger waffle surface than typical consumer models of the period.
Markings are clear and legible. The overall construction reflects the durable, high-quality standards Griswold was known for during its peak manufacturing years.
Condition:
In good vintage condition with typical surface wear and oxidation. No visible cracks or repairs. The cast iron is structurally sound, with some carbon buildup and minor surface rust, primarily around the base and hinge areas. All components are original and intact. May benefit from additional cleaning or seasoning depending on intended use.
